October Musings

Hi,

Please come join us for the October business meeting starting at 11:00am in the Camelot great room (69 Village court berlin ma) on Sunday oct 7th.  We’ll talk about the upcoming K+Q fencing champs,  Iron Scribes and all other sorts of hijinks..   Officers please send in a report (or a deputy 🙂 )

I do want to thank everyone again at the Start on the Street Demo.  It was a fabulous time and as always showed off the Shire in a great light.

Finally thank you to everyone that keeps doing the   Monthly, Weekly and Daily work that keeps the Shire large and active.  It shows..

Matthias.

Hello!

Now that we kick back into the fall season I wanted to call attention to some of the many endeavors that happen into the shire.  Quintavia is a large and active Shire and if you know someone who might be interested in any or all of these activities please drag them along.

Start on the Street Demo  — September 16th  (setup starts at 10am) runs to 5pm.

https://www.facebook.com/events/671311646577978/

Start on the street (https://www.startonthestreet.org/start-street-fall-edition)  is a wonderful arts / crafts festival that the City of Worcester puts on where there are 300+ local artists.  We have a great location in front of Elm park where we talk about SCA and demo some of the martial activities.  Come in garb or not but this is our best demo of the year hosted by Baroness Fortune so you don’t want to miss it.

King + Queens Fencing Champs  (December 8th)

http://eastkingdom.org/EventDetails.php?eid=3397

Quintavia is hosting K+Q fencing champs this year at the Nashoba reginal high school in Bolton ma.   We’ll discuss this in the coming months but even if you don’t fence it’s a good spectacle to watch and we also need help with setup, gate, heralds, list runners and the like.

The Shire hosts a number of Weekly Practices in  Heavy List,  Fencing,  Archery and Thrown Weapons.  See  https://quintavia.eastkingdom.org/events-practices/practices-meetings/  for more information.

European dance continues on the first Tuesday of the month!   Next practice is Tuesday September 4th from 7:30 – 9:30 pm at the Camelot Common House.  See https://quintavia.eastkingdom.org/events-practices/directions/  for directions.

Scribal A+S Moots continue at the 4rth Tuesday of the month!  Next moot is August 28th.

August 28th – 15th C Gothic manuscripts: Part 1, illumination style and calligraphy

September 25th – 15th C Gothic manuscripts: Part 2, white work

October 23rd – Making Oak Gall Ink

Please note you can come to one or both of the 15th C Gothic classes, but will get the most out of it if you can attend both parts.

Scribal help and troubleshooting will still be available at all moots as time allows.

As always, the Moot will be 7-9pm at the Camelot Common House (main room) located at 69 Village Ct in Berlin, MA.

See https://quintavia.eastkingdom.org/events-practices/directions/.

As you can see that is a lot of activities. If you know anyone worthy please write them in.  You can check to see what awards someone has here.  https://op.eastkingdom.org/op.php

And the link for writing someone in is here https://surveys.eastkingdom.org/index.php/945932/lang-en

Cross Posting Functionality – Site Update

Greetings Quintavia!

I bear good tidings! The website is back to normal and running smoothly in regards to the cross posting ability to Facebook and the mailing list. There had been a hiccup in the service as was reported at the Shire business meeting last Sunday but everything is back to normal!

So! If you are an officer or Shire member organizing practices or art-type things please post on the blog first! Need a login? Contact me at webminister@quintavia.eastkingdom.org.

Writting folks in for awards

The SCA is a volunteer organization and work best when people are recognized for the good work that they do.  The heart of that recognition is the  Kingdom (and baronial) award system.  But for people to be brought to the royals attention they need to be written in.   I was going to post some thoughts on writing people in for awards but it turns out someone has already posted a very comprehensive guide on the eastkingdom wiki.

https://wiki.eastkingdom.org/index.php?title=Recommending_Someone_for_an_Award

Please check it out if you haven’t done so already.

The awards form can be found here  http://surveys.eastkingdom.org/index.php/945932/lang-en  (it is linked on the main page of the EK website).

One tip that I like that isn’t covered in the wiki article is I save all of my award recommendations,  as with any writing style it helps to practice it.  So having an archive of  recommendations to look over when I’m written people in helps make the next one better.

Between the Award of Arms,  AOA level  “silver” awards, grant level awards and peerages, there is a large range of  awards focusing on people’s progression as they put more time and energy and skill in.

The OP database page as a nice listing of the  awards and handy way of searching if some has an award already.

EK 50 Year Hall of History Help

My fellow Quintavians,

As EK50 continues to approach, please consider taking some time to support representing the Shire in the Hall of History. Quintavia is the oldest, largest, and mightiest Shire in the East and I want to do us proud. To that end, I’m looking for help before the event assembling displays of our events and history, assistance decorating the booth on Thursday as the event is getting started, and help staffing the booth during the event.

Quintavia has hosted a number of beloved recurring events over the years: Boredom War, Hafla, Embroidery Schola, and King’s and Queen’s Equestrian Championships. I’m looking for volunteers to assember shadow-box style displays, of about 3 feet by 3 feet, for each of these events to help capture the feel of being in Quintavia’s grassy hills. I have plenty of pictures to assist you, but I can’t build them all myself, I just don’t have that much creative energy. Can you help?

I would also like to display the rich tradition of our Keepers of Quintavia. If you have any of the Relics, can you please make arrangements to leave them with me for use at the event? If you are a calligrapher, would you be interested in creating a roll of the Keepers to display?

Lastly, there are over 30 visiting hours for the Hall of History over the course of the weekend. If only 15 people were to help, we could all take one 2-hour shift and ensure there’s always someone available to showcase the glory of our Shire. Can you commit to just two hours staffing the booth?

If you can help in any way, please contact me at gpettigrew@gmail.com

-Pomestnik Andreiko Eferiev, your humble Servant

Heraldry Gathering – Tuesday, May 15th, 2018

Greetings Quintavians,

The next Learning Heraldry Gathering will be on Tuesday, May 15th, 6-8 pm at the Camelot common House, 69 Village Ct., Berlin, MA 01503.  (We were going to do this last week, but we ended up rescheduling.)  For this gathering, we will be going through the Names 101 class on the East Kingdom Heraldic University website, http://elmet.eastkingdom.org/ekhu/, and probably also finishing up the Book Heraldry 100 class (we didn’t get to the last 10 minutes or so last time).  We will probably continue going through the basic Names classes from the website before moving on to something else.

If you are interested in learning with us, please come join us!  Also, feel free to let me know what sort of heraldry you would like to learn in the future.  We are thinking of meeting on the 2nd Tuesday of each month, 6-8 pm, eating dinner together at the beginning of the gathering.  I’m making grilled chicken and some sort of veggies for this week, so please let me know off-list if you want in.

Cheers,

Rosina
