Scribal Moot – June 2017

Good morning A&S friends!

Just a friendly reminder that the next scribal moot will be on June 27th at Camelot. Our special guest teach is our very own EK Signet Nataliia!

You may be asking yourself, “Self? Why is Feilinn posting about this so early in the month?”

Fear not, I have the answer! The reason is because there are also two pretty cool and pretty crazy SCA events going on in June that might be of interest to people. A decent amount of local people are making the various trips and they are great opportunities to meet people and learn something new.

The Known World Dance and Music Symposium is June 15-18th in Baltimore (Kingdom of Atlantia) – http://www.kwds.org/

The Known World Heraldic and Scribal Symposium is June 23-25th in Knoxville (Kingdom of Meridies) – http://kwhss2017.nant-y-derwyddon.com/

Youth & Teen Events at the Battle of Five Armies

Unto the fair populace of the wondrous Shire of Quintavia do I, Perronnelle de Croy, send greetings!

Youth & Teen in the SCAI write to you on behalf of the younger generations that will be attending the glorious Battle of Five Armies in late August. I will be the Youth & Teen activity and class coordinator and would like to ask for anyone interested in teaching a class or leading an activity or helping in some way, shape or form, to contact me using the form below. If you have an idea but need help fleshing it out, please ask!

To the teens out there: what would you like to see? Learn? Would you like to teach something? I want to hear from you!

For now I have these activities planned:

  • Queen Caoilfhionn’s Service Initiative
  • Treasure Hunt for the younger
  • Family S’mores bar (YUM!)

Internet for A&S Research and Feedback

Good morning, A&S friends!

I want to share something that came up last night at the Scribal Moot. How do you get feedback and learn what some possible next steps are to improve your art or research?

One benefit of the internet and social media is connecting with groups of people you may not have contact with regularly. In the A&S community on Facebook and G+ there are specialty groups that allow for discussion, constructive feedback, and allow you to put faces to names. I use it to enhance interactions with people I see at events (not replace, because seeing people in real life is pretty cool too).

A Brewer’s Guild display.

Going to A&S groups at events or Shire (or Canton or Baronial) workshops lets you get hands on learning and is a great place to ask for feedback when there is downtime either before or after the workshop. For all you embroiderers out there, Athena’s Thimble is very good about feedback and peer review. For scribes, there are local guilds and specific deputies who can help (especial the New Scribe’s Deputy). I hear the Brewer’s Guild also does round table discussions and offers feedback on entering A&S competitions.

In the meant time…there are some good groups here on Facebook. Some of these groups are closed and you’ll need to wait for a moderator to grant you access, but others are open to the public. Do some poking and you’ll find some familiar faces and even some new teachers!

For the Scribal inclined – “EK Scribes” is great for posting works in progress and getting constructive feedback. “SCA Scribes” or “SCA Scribes and Illumination” lets you see what other people are doing across the Known World!

For the Embroidery inclined – “The Keepers of Athena’s Thimble” is very active and sometimes features bonus posts about owls. 🙂

There are numerous groups for all types of SCA personas from Vikings to Courtesans. They can help with garb ideas, research, and even offer candid “learn from my mistakes” posts.

There are way too many groups to even list, but these are the ones that sprung to mind on my drive home last night. Go forth and explore! And never feel bad asking for some candid feedback. If we can’t help you, chances are we know someone who can help point you in the right direction.

Email Posting and Other News

Greetings Unto The Fair Populace of Quintavia!

This is your friendly neighborhood webminister. It’s been a while since you have heard from me and some of you may be confused as to new mail that you have been receiving that look a little odd. I apologize because this is my doing.

I have been handed a tool that for officers and for myself is supposed to help streamline the communication process. Keywords are “supposed to.” It’s taken a while to get the kinks worked out but I believe that I now have this particular bit of communication ironed out. What does this mean for you? Only that weekly you will receive an email with the latest news. Only once a week, on Saturdays. (OFFICERS – Take note that notices for the upcoming week and such should be posted prior to Saturday!) That’s it. Simple. Nothing else will change. For the more involved answer  and the why this has come into play keep reading!  Continue reading “Email Posting and Other News”

Hafla Thank You

I just want to take a moment say thank you to everyone who came out to our Hafla on Saturday!

First I’d like to thank the set-up and clean up crews: Rosina and Andreiko, Corwin – you weren’t able to stay for the event but came and help out anyways. Our head cat-herder Matthias, Meabh, Mikjáll, and his Grace Edward and his squire (so sorry I can’t recall your name!) Set up was done with twenty minutes to spare and clean up was even faster. You are all amazing.

My Kitchen crew: Lord Alexsei and Lady Elvira led the charge and delivered food that was raved about, throughout the hall. Thank you for making it all work in a new space.

The magnificent Lady Toi….without you the hall would have been bare and our tummies slightly less full. Thank you for everything you do for this event year after year.

Her Grace Thyra who is my dace group liaison and music provider.

A huge thank you goes out to our dancers (BRS, Baklava, and the Eves) and out attendees. We love seeing you each year and without you all it would be one pretty dull day! I hope I’ve not missed anyone but if I have and even if I haven’t: Thank you, thank you, thank you.

It’s such a pleasure and a joy to help put this together but I could never do it alone.

Until next year!

Lady Perronnelle de Croy
