The Quintavian Milestone
March 2006

Chronicler's Greeting:

Well welcome to spring! It hopefully will start getting warmer! I hope you enjoy this issue of the milestone.. we have some funny stories, and a wonderful report from our Mistress of Arts and Sciences
Teresa Giani from her trip to Northern Lights. I also attended Northern lights and had a wonderful time and am inspired by all the amazing crafts of those of the East Kingdom.
We are always looking for writers for the milestone. If you are interested in writing or submitting anything (artwork or pictures) please contact either myself or my deputy editor Teresa Giani.
Thank you and hope to see you all this spring!

Yours In Service,

Lady Dhanwanti

From the Pen of the Mistress of Arts & Sciences

Greetings from Teresa Giani:

We now have both a Dance Mistress and Deputy MOAS, Christi has graciously accepted the posts! She can be reached via email at christi@pryanksters.org.

I am working to schedule more classes, please contact me if you would like to teach a class or if there is a class you would like to take. We will be having some neighbors coming to teach classes in the coming months and more could be found for specific classes upon request.

I would like to encourage you to go to http://www.eastkingdom.org/artsci/interests.html and submit your information. This is a wonderful place for SCAdians to find people of similar interests and to find each other and for MOASes to find people to teach classes.

I would like to put together a Regional Schola to coincide with a Regional Fight practice we are contemplating for the May 20-21 weekend. If anyone has contacts at a school or other site we could potentially use for this please contact me at chrystie69@gmail.com .

Event Report: Northern Lights Competition XV
By Teresa Giani
(Shire of Quintavia Mistress of Arts and Sciences)

As many of you know several Quintavians made the long trip to the Shire of Panther Vale in Montpelier, VT this month for Northern Lights’ 15th anniversary Pentathlon. We judged, entered competition, performed, and were inspired to do projects of our own. Both Lady Dhani and Lady Brigit have expressed interest in working on the Pent for next year! Also Lady Dhani and Lady Brigit performed for the masses while we anxiously waited for the judges to finalize their tabulations.

My own entry won for beading, a 10th century Byzantine Dalmatica (over dress) that I have been working on for over 11 years now. The Fabric and some of the trim were purchased from Freya Manslayer and more trim and pearls were purchased at various shops. The Tapestry Butterflies were purchased from Cloak & Dagger. Mistress Brid ni Shearlais taught me about Byzantine dress both in a class and outside. She showed me better ways to sew down the beads and to apply the trim.

The Story of the Trojan War Bunny
(dedicated to Christi the Dancer)
by Lady Brigit of Longwood

On a cold morn at some theoretical Pennsic, the campgrounds of the Mid were restless. Folk shivered as they climbed out of their tents, looking at each other uncertainly: did everyone hear that, or were they hallucinating?

Boom. Boom.

As the dawn rose a little higher, they saw it at last on the horizon: something big and white and very fuzzy. Some said it must be a strange type of cloud. Others, fearing an imminent storm, raced back to their tents to secure their property. Some just stared.

Boom. Boom.

The King of the Mid walked out of his tent, thinking kingly thoughts (like, what am I having for lunch). He heard the cries of his people, as he yawned and blinked, finding himself facing...
... a very large
very fuzzy
foot.

He looked up, puzzled, into the hugest face he'd ever seen. It had sad, wide eyes and a widdle (respectively) nose, that kept crinkling and widdle (respectively) whiskers and
one long, long ear was flopped over half of one eye most winsomely. The King of the Mid, this great fighter, this amazing strategist, stared up into those huge, huge eyes, and his heart melted.
"Awwwww..." he said, his heart just turning to mush. "Wook at de widdle bunny wabbit...."And he scritched the bunny's huge, giant, foot. Bunny seemed to like that.
And the rest of the people of the Mid came gathering around and tentatively began to give Bunny scritches as well.
For the rest of the morning, Bunny followed the King around the campground. "Aww," said his knights. His ladies sighed, and tried to feed it lettuce (they gathered huge amounts). The children climbed all over it.
When the time for the battle, in the afternoon, came, the King looked around and found that Bunny had followed him there! He frowned. He did not want to be the king to have to tell his people that Bunny had gotten injured in battle. He looked over at the other side, where the pitifully small forces of the East and its allies were gathering. "Huh, must have injured more than I thought yesterday," he said to himself. Then he turned to Bunny. "Now, go back to the campground," he said, "I don't want you getting hurt here."
Bunny wrinkled its cute nose at him.
Then Bunny opened its large, large mouth....
...and split right in half!
Before the King could blink, out rolled three huge seige towers...
...accompanied by a horde of fighters.
Neither were his.
(what the King said next has been edited out for the sake of a G-rating).

The King of the Mid was quickly surrounded, and his men were helpless. There was nothing they could do. They were so stunned that the "pitiful" forces who hadn't come with "Bunny" easily took them, with barely a need to fight. And so it was that the East won that day, and got the final war point. The gracious (and clever) King and Queen of the East said that the King of the Mid had fought well, and he'd been a good sport about it all. "We know that you are worried about your people, that they love the Bunny," said the Queen. "So we will give it to you, for their sake."
And lo and behold, the huge Bunny, now stuffed (for heaven's sake, don't ask me how, it's a story).
"Awww..." said the court.
So it was that the Middle Kingdom acquired Bunny, and the people, I hear, take it to all events as the official mascot. The kids (and the adults) just love it.
Aww.
